Special Exhibits

The 2021 Quilts on the Red quilt show included three challenge exhibits . Quilters chose one or more, put on their thinking caps, and created some amazing art.

Salute to Essential Workers Challenge

Quilters honored a person or a profession in the Salute to Essential Workers Challenge at Quilts on the Red 2021 to recognize and thank people who have made a difference in our region. Entries could can use a commercial pattern, be adapted from a pattern, or be an original design. Suggestions were a wall hanging or a household item such as a table topper. There was no minimum size. Maximum size was a perimeter of 140 inches, have three layers (top, batting, backing), and be quilted. Quilts were entered in the Essential Worker Challenge category. This is a non-judged category with no entry fee. NSQG members as well as non-members invited to participate.

Watercolor Challenge: Round 3

NSQG and the River Forks Watercolor Society (RFWS) united for a third time at the 2021 Quilts on the Red Show. Four years ago, the painters invited NSQG to their spring art show and challenged us to select a painting and create a quilt. Two years ago, we hosted an exhibit of art quilts and invited the painters to create a painting inspired by one of our quilts. This year is a new, pandemic-friendly format. The watercolor artists chose a local landmark and signed up through their guild. Then NSQG members signed up to create a quilt inspired by the landmark on the RFWS list. The identity of the watercolor artist and quilter were revealed at the quilt show along with their art.

An advanced-purchase hors d’oeuvre reception for the Watercolor Challenge was held on Thursday, November 18th at 7 pm. The reception on Thursday night included a “sneak peek” of the show quilts.
