Education Workshops take place either during or in the afternoon, following the regular Saturday morning guild meeting. These educational opportunities are usually taught by guild members who share a special technique or teach the construction of a small project.
There is no charge for the afternoon workshops, unless the topic requires a kit or special material. These are open to the public.

This is a very nice looking and sturdy Casserole (Hotdish) Cover, designed for a 9 x 13 inch pan. Leslee S will teach us how to make this great project. Once you have made this one, you will understand how to modify it for any dish you have. You might want to bring your pan to class just to make sure you get your straps into the best place for your container. Plan to prepare for class by pre-cutting your fabric and Insul-Bright. Supplies and Cutting Directions will be emailed to everyone who signs up. Sign up online.
Free workshop after the morning North Star Quilters Guild meeting (~11:45 AM).
Bring your lunch.
The public is welcome.
November 4, 2023 – Make a Fabric Box or Bin
Visitors are welcome to this free Fabric Box Making class!
Fabric Box Class
Time to move to new projects and maybe even begin thinking of Christmas gifts. November’s education class will make great gifts as we will be making fabric boxes/bins. Dawn P. will teach/demonstrate making fabric boxes/bins immediately following the guild meeting. Dawn will give you instructions should you want to make various sizes.
Bring your lunch, the following prepared materials, and sewing supplies for a bin measuring 9x9x6:
- 2 fat quarters—one for outside and one for lining
- ½ yard Pellon 809 Décor Bond (45-in. width interfacing)
Prior to the class, fuse half of the Pellon 809 Décor Bond to the wrong side of each fat quarter, then trim each to 16 x 22 inches. Those measurements can vary slightly to get the most efficient use of your materials, which will alter the finished size of your bin.
Bring sewing supplies:
- Machine
- Thread
- Pins
- Ruler
- Scissors

The Kaleidoscope 4-Patch quilt is created by stacking 4 repeats of a colorful, large print fabric- then cutting repeating blocks. The result is four beautiful identical blocks which can be combined to create a variety of circular designs at the center of the blocks. No two finished blocks are the same. Add sashing and you have an amazing quilt!
Saturday, February 4, 2023
The afternoon will include three separate demonstrations, which will take place concurrently, so everyone has a chance to closely attend all three. Each will last about 25 minutes and include a sign-up sheet to determine interest in a class on any of these topics.
Bonnie S. and Charlene C. will demonstrate an Introduction to Ruler Work using a Domestic Sewing Machine. This demo will include a discussion on tools and equipment needed for ruler work, setting up your machine, tips and techniques, and resources for further learning. Participants will be able to watch a demonstration of ruler quilting and ask questions about the process.
Jan and Merie K. will demonstrate English Paper Piecing, each will share their own styles and techniques.
Nancy K. will demonstrate the fun Art of Making Rope Bowls made with either scraps or fabric chosen just for this project.
